Gas and groceries

Allen, Texas is a far north Dallas suburb, actually located in Collin County, one of the wealthiest counties in the nation.

Of course, not everyone in Allen is wealthy.

I've mentioned before that demand for services from our food pantry is way up--like about 40% above this time last year.

Check out this story from WFAA-TV Channel 8 here in Dallas to get in touch with the growing need and the pervasive nature of the challenge:

I'd love to hear your reactions.

That's an eye-opener. I suspect that many of my students (junior college) come from families who have those kinds of concerns. I would like to know how to be more than a classroom teacher to them. Many of them have come to school primarily because they want to better their job/life prospects; but they're so unprepared to do college-level work, and other pressures make it difficult for them to get through even a semester.

That's nothing compared to what the economic situation will become if Obama becomes president. The tax rate will be at least 60%, the capital gains tax will double, which means businesses will close up or move overseas. illegal immigrants will get free health care, compliments of the taxpayer. Socialized health care will mean it will be rationed. A young illegal could get a transplant but an elderly citizen could not, etc. We cannot afford Obama either economically or for national security.

Chris, of course, I couldn't disagree more with every word you write here. But, I'll let others weigh in with their reactions. Your penchant for hyperbole is fairly amazing!

Chris, first of all, you're a loony. I don't say that because you disagree with me, I say that because even Fox News would be too shameful to spout your lies. I'm not even going to ask for documentation, because we both know it doesn't exist. But if you'd like to show us how he can possibly raise spending more than W, please let us know.

I want to address a possible-to-debate point. I always hear companies will pack up and leave - where will they go? What countries that are safe and luxurious enough for executives have tax rates as low as ours? Where is the entire workforce equally educated and motivated by an "American Dream" to work as many hours as we do? I assume they don't like Europe, and would be afraid of the Russian mob and Chinese government. Up-and-coming economic powers like India and Brazil are still not completely safe in the streets and have enough economic inequality to risk nationalization/revolution.

Larry, I appreciate how much you let everyone say what's on their mind, no matter how inane or evil. At this point, I think it would be fair to treat Chris as a spammer and block her - her "talking points" are as fake, unsubstantiated, and unChristian as cell phone and drug sales pitches. Let honest conservatives like Justin and IBreakCellPhones make the valid points for that side of the aisle.

You do have to hand it to Chris for cramming so much vitriolic hyperbole and false information into only ten lines of text. It's really something of an achievement.

Check the new book "Fleeced" by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann.

Is that a book or a hodgepodge of right-wing propaganda?

I really don't know how you put up with Chris, Larry. At least other conservatives on here argue respectfully and back up their arguments. If it were my blog, I'd loop her into the rest of the spam posts.

You were right, I was wrong - Fox News will air people with vague factless pronouncements no matter how incendiary. I notice no documnetation mentioned in everything I could find about that book either. Nice selectivity though - ignores every bad thing a Republican has actually done in favor of something he thinks an evil Democrat might do. I can't imagine why you enjoy his writing.

Thanks for agreeing that even you can't come up with support for the "businesses and the rich will leave!" argument.

Charles, demonizing those who disagree with your political slant, and raging against them personally to the point of elimininating them, is scary. I personally learn from "both sides of the aisle". Bill

Bill, I completely agree. Most of my comments in the past have been to either disagree/agree with points people make, or to defend the conservative commenters when they get slammed. This particular commenter (who is the only one I think should be removed from a discussion) has a thorough history of not having any thought or example behind her points, just repeating the most unloving judgemental "thoughts" she can find from the extreme right wing. I want to hear from people who disagree with me, and have learned from many of them, and been convinced by some of them - I'm just very very tired of people without thoughts pretending their words are true just because they say them.

Sorry this was your first impression of me. Hopefully the whole picture will be better.
