Hunger and American Families

Here's a moving story that aired earlier this week on NPR. It's "part one" of a series of reports on American hunger. You'll hear from U. S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Kevin Concannon, who traveled to Dallas earlier this summer to swear in our AmeriCorps and VISTA teams.

What this family needs more than anything else is education regarding food. The thought of dumping 2 cups of sugar in colored water is unbelievable. Six hundred dollars will buy a lot of food. Cut the sweet cereal and eat oatmeal, which is much better if you throw in a few rasins.I could feed that family and have money left over. Food was never a problem when my children were growing up but I never spent that kind of money, even allowing for inflation.
