It's very powerful.

I'm reminded of Les Miserables, “Let us never fear robbers or murderers. They are dangers from without, petty dangers. Let us fear ourselves. Prejudices are the real robbers; vices are the real murderers. The great dangers lie within ourselves. What matters it if something threatens are head or our purse! Let us think only of that which threatens the soul.” There's something transformative when someone is treated with dignity and trust instead of hostility and suspicion. I believe if we truly embrace this, it has the effect of transforming us too.

Thank you for all the work you do and the incredible way you do it!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09623050264519860624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9827454.post-1145502252417335952006-04-19T22:04:00.000-05:002006-04-19T22:04:00.000-05:00MommyHAM -- who knows, maybe we'll be in Colorado ...MommyHAM -- who knows, maybe we'll be in Colorado one day?

As the fundraiser, I'm sure I'll be giving you a call. :)Jeremy Gregghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08122578682015984032noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9827454.post-1145020149996369892006-04-14T08:09:00.000-05:002006-04-14T08:09:00.000-05:00Excellent post...it is so easy to get caught up in...Excellent post...it is so easy to get caught up in doing FOR the poor instead of doing WITH the poor. Some of the most humbling moments can be realizing that the ones I am ministering to have in fact started ministering to me.Suziehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16094311274463856005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9827454.post-1145002419693808442006-04-14T03:13:00.000-05:002006-04-14T03:13:00.000-05:00Oh, you are SO up my alley!!I work for a city Huma...Oh, you are SO up my alley!!

I work for a city Human Services Office that administers Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) funds in CO....I sure wish we had more folks like you up here - Keep up the great work - I'm linking your site to my blog!Heatherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04653012877754804144noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9827454.post-1144944419191966352006-04-13T11:06:00.000-05:002006-04-13T11:06:00.000-05:00Anonymous, I likely need to know more about your c...Anonymous, I likely need to know more about your community and options, but I can tell you there is a way to open your efforts to indigenous leaders of the community you are now targeting.

If you lose donors, which seems to be your assumption, you will find new ones who are attracted by your new way of doing business. That was our case. We lost many people and some financial support, but we gained far, far more.

For example, in 1994, our annual operations budget here was below $200,000. This year our budget is over $6 million. Our staff has grown from 2-3 to about 100.

I don't exaggerate when I say the most important factor in our growth and deepened engagement in the community here is the way we now relate to the people who come to us in "need."

Call me if you'd like to talk.Larry Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06124477733714017000noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9827454.post-1144939373448738572006-04-13T09:42:00.000-05:002006-04-13T09:42:00.000-05:00Larry, I love people power. The food we receive from the churches that provide volunteers keep us going. If we change who is volunteering won't our food supply be lost? A lot of our donations, both food and money, are a result of the donor working here.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
