Your ideas are insightful and should be given to all churches interested in combating poverty, and more importantly, the brokenness that plagues our society.

I'm reminded of the reasons i "dropped out" of my desire to do traditional foreign missions. Too often we view service or help as something external, superficial, and not-requiring much of a lifestyle change. Sort of a Laissez-faire style of reaching people. It's the result of a compartmentalized life, I do believe. After all, who wants to get their hands dirty, right? I often wonder when we'll snap out of our need to satisfy some guilt and start getting real. Thanks for your encouragement, and challenge.Jermshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04934264601208587356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9827454.post-7523652088908087032007-04-26T14:14:00.000-05:002007-04-26T14:14:00.000-05:00Amen brother! I've worked over at Fortress in Fort Worth for almost 8 years and have come to realize how important it is to really clarify the roles of our volunteers from outside the community; to them and the community. I look forward to sharing this post with our staff, board and all of our volunteer groups as we try to become more effective and honor our community through "affluent church" partnerships.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9827454.post-27487716054768695192007-04-25T12:40:00.000-05:002007-04-25T12:40:00.000-05:00LarryI agree with you as to the need for us volunt...Larry

I agree with you as to the need for us volunteers to be willing to follow the lead of the folks in charge at your programs. We come with a hope (need) to help others but it is hard to change how we view ourselves as helpers. You are right in that it is very hard for most of us to accept help; so why is it hard for many of us to remember that we are the ones being blessed and served by opportunities to be in community with the "poor" and/or homeless. I hope you keep on reminding us.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
