Les Miserables

“There is always more misery among the lower classes than there is humanity in the higher.”

Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

  1. This quote represents so many concerns between classes in this country. It is lucky for people in the lower or higher classes to stray away from these stereotypes, but it is apparent they do stray away and life happy, humane lives no matter the status of their wealth. Members of the lower class may experience depression because of their financial status’ but we are told everyday that money doesn’t bring happiness; instead the quote says it brings selfishness. I think that Christianity plays a strong role in this dilemma because God will guide you through life, rich or poor. Lack of humanity is not characteristic of all upper class members and misery is not the consequence for all in the lower class. No matter what class, how happy you are, or how you contribute to society depends on your attitude and your faith. Too bad we are so focused on money that instead of attitudes and faith being the issues, it is lack of government support. We have to blame our personal and class problems on something, and they will never go away for members of each class without strong faith and a positive attitude.
