Merton on atheism

Do not be too quick to condemn the man who no longer believes in God: for it is perhaps your own coldness and avarice and mediocrity and materialism and selfishness that have chilled his faith.

(1915-1968)

  1. Talk about an inconvenient truth! Fortunately, the opposite is true as well: when believers really do act like Christ, to each other and non-believers, God is more real to everyone.

  2. Drove by a church tonight and this is what the sign said "God does not believe in atheist, therefore they do not exist". Thought that was a strange way to reach the community?? Seems like it would be better to say "you don't have to believe in God for Him to love you"
