10 things you need to know to live on the streets. . .

Here is one of The Nation magazine's famous or infamous "Ten Things" columns.  Thanks to my friend, Don Williams for directing me to it.

If you care about homelessness and homeless persons, you must read this one!  Just click here to do so.

As always, I'd love to hear your reactions.

This was quite an eye-opener. Asking the homeless to organize is a bit of a stretch. I'm sure there are a few homeless people with the requisite skills, but most homeless people wouldn't be homeless if they possessed community organizing skills. Perhaps the article should have been called, "10 things college educated people need to know to live on the streets."

The skill deal is actually trumped by the requirements of individual survival. Even at that, the homeless organize into supportive communions. They are certainly smart enough. I've often thought of trying to organize the community of the homeless so that they could begin to shape the political agenda and discussion in light of their daily realities.
