Green Collar Jobs

I'm making way through Van Jones' compelling book, Green Collar Jobs: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems (Harper One, 2008).

His thinking and vision are beyond sound.

You can get a feel for Jones and his argument here.

I hope we can get him to Dallas soon. I'll keep you posted.

Thoughts?

Larry,

Have you read "Being Consumed" by Cavanaugh?

I'm reading through it right now, its a discussion of Christian economics... its been enlightening for me in discussing how the free market is only free in the negative sense, which has made me think about a lot of stuff, but he also offers criticism of other modern economic systems and justice.

I don't know that you would agree with him completely as so far in the book, it doesn't appear that he agrees with centrally planned economies, but nonetheless, so far, its one of the best theological economics books I've ever read.

Your comment seems to assume that Larry believes in "centrally planned economies." Larry can speak for himself, but please tell me you do not think that Larry believes in "centrally planned economies." I have never read anything here that makes me think for a minute he believes in Soviet style communism!

since when does central planning equate soviet style communism? Is soviet style communism central planning? yes. but so is a quasi free market economy where the government is the largest driver of employment and the development of infrastructure. I wasn't calling Larry a soviet. Once again, people read what they want to hear into comments of those with whom they disagree.

From the New York Times:

Sept. 10, 1923:

The southward advance of glaciers have given rise to conjectures of the possible advent of a new ice age.

Jan 2, 1939:

Those who claim that winters were harder when they were boys were quite right--weather men have no doubt that the world is growing warmer.

June 24, 1974:

Cliamatologists are becoming apprehensive for the weather abberations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.

Aoril 9, 2001:

Scientists no longer doubt that global warming is happening.

(Actually there has been a slight cooling in the last 20 years.)

Yep, it's me! Time for my troll to come out of hiding.

Hey, I take offense to the Soviet comment! I am married to a Soviet. Contrary to what we were taught in the U.S. they are not Godless or evil. The man knows more Bible than I do, and I went to a CoC school and church everytime the doors were open.

Hey hun, nice to see ya!

Your husband was a soviet? or he just lived in Russia during the Soviet reign? If your husband was a member of the party, I'd really like to hear how he justifies the way that government behaved, sending dissidents to Siberia, starving the Ukrainians, invading multiple countries, controling the media, etc

Yep, he's a real life soviet! What he says and what we've been told are VERY different.

And he does enjoy talking and teaching when people are open to hearing the way it really is vs. what they've been told.

Maybe the reason he tells a different story is because he doesn't want to admit the terrible things that the communist government in the USSR did to their own people? I just have a hard time believing anyone could defend a regime that brutally oppressed its own people, starving them, not allowing free speech or press, forcing military service, executing or banishing dissidents, etc
