Sunday reflection: Valuing Compassion and Justice

Consider this value proposition:

Deuteronomy 15 1-11 (The Message)

At the end of every seventh year, cancel all debts. This is the procedure: Everyone who has lent money to a neighbor writes it off. You must not press your neighbor or his brother for payment: All-Debts-Are-Canceled—God says so.

Whoa! Doesn't sound much like the stuff I've heard from friends at church. . .biblical "socialism"? or, am I missing something about the value proposition here? Darned sure doesn't sound like capitalism. Cancel debts? Every 7years? Obey what is commanded and eliminate poverty? This also sounds like the source for the quote of Jesus that always gives us an "out" for really getting serious about poverty and faith. Like I say, Whoa! Thanks for the pointer. . .
